Mentor session · Brian Lee × Ziv

Offense, not defense

The September “storm” feeling was a snowball from missing — and undersizing — late-August month-maker days. The maxes were not the crisis. The wins that never fully arrived were.

Brian Lee opened Ziv’s journal — July, August, and September calendars, year-to-date cumulative R and drawdown — and walked the tape. The frame of the call was calibration. The verdict, delivered without drama: this was roughly the most average line Brian could expect. Stats were fine. Process had not collapsed. What hurt was not the losing side. It was the offense that never fully showed up when the market offered month-makers in the last two weeks of August — and the irony that drawdown control was on precisely when full size was required to climb out.

The thesis

September’s weather was downstream of August’s unfinished business. Weeks one and two of August — the drawdown stretch — Brian called fine. “Getting away with that is really good.” The miss lived in the last two weeks of the month: those weeks should have been month-makers. Instead they left Ziv underwater into September. That snowball is what felt like a storm.

Offense, not defense. The pain is concentrated in late-August wins that were missed or undersized — not in broken maxes. Brian Lee · Sep 15, 2026

If the losing side were broken, the draw would be much bigger. The pod took wreckage early August and late July; Ziv’s concentrated pain sat in those two late-August weeks plus under-captured good days. Brian’s read of the numbers: at roughly +272 R with fuller size on the right days, the mood would be fine. He will fault covering too soon and undersizing. He is not seeing broken maxes or process collapse.

The cycle paradox got a clean answer. Be aware of the cycle; do not change core mechanics. No pre-cutting, no shallower targets just because nothing is fading. The system is built for a normal fade market. Separate (a) how stocks are acting from (b) what expected performance should look like — and check in with Brian when that second question is not obvious: what should a high-level trader be doing right now?

Risk · R · rules

Drawdown control
Rolling −5 R over 5 days → half-size / DD control.
Circuit breaker
−10 R — leave both.
The irony
DD control was on during days that needed full size to climb out — especially around Aug 18–20.
Cover framing
Don’t think cover at 6R. Start thinking at 9R; cover if it comes back to 6.
Extreme gap sizing
Push past standard — 8R+ on a ~204% BDRX-type gap — not 6R hesitation.
Inducement ≠ pipe
Don’t manage inducement like a pipe.

August on the tape

Dates below follow the journal and filed Daily Screenshots / D1 trade notes. A few verbal timestamps on the call were off by a day — the charts lock the calendar.

August 7

~+8.69 R — Brian fine

A clean green day in the first half of the month. No autopsy required; the review moved on.

The week that needed size

WTO / WETO · PFSA (worst) · XOS · TRUG

Drawdown control was engaged going into the stretch that should have rebuilt the month. The conflict between risk protocol and offense opportunity is the structural irony of late August.

Underwriters back. Brian’s verbal “20th” maps to the filed Aug 19 EHGO trade note. Size was the miss; the thesis was not.

SGLY — the biggest one

SGLY

Good entry; add, then stop moved to midpoint — then chopped. Brian’s signal stop lived around ~8% over the high. Call audio said “19th”; journal, Dropbox day folder, and D1 note all lock Aug 20. This is homework one.

Aug 25: the Evernote title references PSNYW-class warrant context; the filed charts are DFNS only — no standalone PSNYW still. Brian would pass a ~1000% warrant-vs-dead-underlying divergence if he’d never seen it; still study the pattern. Aug 27 PPCB was the best of the cluster.

Call day · BDRX ~204%

A live case on the call itself: roughly a 204% gap. Path on the day — 2R just-in-case, a TION-analogy pull, re-enter about 30¢ worse, finish around 6R instead of 8R+, fretting inducement. Brian’s cut: size is the issue. Inducement is not a pipe; don’t manage it like one.

No D1 Gappers note and no Daily Screenshots PNG for BDRX on 2026-09-15 (day folder is CSVs only). Chart figure omitted on purpose — narrative stands; drop a still here later if one is filed.

Process locks

Six rules Brian locked on the call — keep them as operating doctrine, not optional mood:

  1. Reverse-engineer good days first.
  2. Don’t pre-cut because the room is pre-cutting.
  3. After a stop-out second try: ask what the setup is — midday run-ups are mostly technical.
  4. Don’t collapse stop to midpoint after adds on A+ fades; respect ~8% over high signal stop.
  5. Cycle check-ins with Brian when expected P&L isn’t obvious.
  6. Walk into the fire daily; don’t invent a new system.

Actionables

  1. Tag late-August as offense miss / undersize / DD-control conflict.
  2. Deep review: Aug 20 SGLY; Aug 19 EHGO; Aug 21 SUGP; Aug 25 DFNS (PSNYW-note context); Aug 27 PPCB.
  3. Score the July flags (WOLF 7/1, NDRA 7/8, AIRI 7/10, SXTP 7/15, HSDT 7/21).
  4. Build an extreme-gap checklist; keep DD −5 / CB −10.
  5. Cover think starts at 9R.
  6. Ask Brian what a high-level week should look like right now.

Average path. The draws aren’t the crisis — missed and undersized late-August wins are. Don’t change the system for the cycle. Reverse-engineer the good days, and show up sized.
